Leaders from Los Angeles’ Trans Community Speak Out Against President Trump’s “Un-American and Un-Christian” Transgender Military Ban

(LOS ANGELES) – JULY 27, 2017 – Fresh on the heels of President Trump’s controversial announcement via Twitter Wednesday that he was effectively banning all transgender Americans from serving in the United States military, leaders from Los Angeles’ Transgender community are speaking out in opposition.

Lindsey Deaton, Founder and Artistic Director of the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, issued this statement immediately following President Trump’s Twitter announcement: “John 15:13 states: ‘Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.’”

“To deny transgender people from serving in the United States armed forces is not only un-American, it’s un-Christian. Not too long ago, African-Americans could not serve in the military and Japanese-Americans were restricted to fighting in Europe. History will prove that transgender soldiers, sailors and airmen have done their duty for God and country and that can not be erased.”

The Trans Chorus of Los Angeles is the largest group of trans and non-binary people anywhere in the world who gather regularly to create music.

Alan Uphold, Board Chair of the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, had this to say: “The Trans Chorus of Los Angeles was disappointed and angered today to learn that once again trans Americans are being denied the same rights as their fellow citizens. The announcement that trans individuals will be banned from serving in the U.S. military is unfair and un-American.”

“The mission of TCLA is to allow trans people to raise their voices in song and demonstrate to the world that trans people are equal and valued members of our society. The announcement to ban courageous trans Americans from serving their country flies directly in the face of that critical mission.”

The TCLA is the premier trans chorus in the world and is at the forefront of the international trans choral movement. Its mission is to fiercely empower trans and non-binary people to discover, love and use their voices to change the cultural ecology everywhere.
