In February 2025, the National Park Service removed references to transgender people from the Stonewall National Monument website, replacing “LGBTQ+” with “LGB.” This was an attempt to erase the work done by trans women - Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Miss Major among others - from the queer rights movement.
That night, Los Angeles composer and producer Alana Balagot wrote the protest song You Can’t Erase Us in response to the attempted erasure of the trans community and its role in LGBTQ+ history.
The song is now performed and recorded by the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, amplifying a message that the trans community cannot be erased.
